MISSION STATEMENT
Inspirational adventure novelist Lilly Maytree and her Captain husband were off on their adventure of a lifetime when they jumped into the position of administrators at Summers Island Press. Having fallen in love with an island they never knew existed before they dropped anchor there, they soon found themselves publishing a line of “mysteriously different books for children” in Thorne Bay, Alaska.
As former educators, they had also developed curriculum for outdoor activities that incorporated nature studies, wilderness skills, and motivational behavior programs. Many of which were for troubled youth through state agencies. After years of experience, they had a lot to say about what motivates children, and have implemented many of their unique ideas into books and programs that others can use. The Wilderness School Institute seemed like a wonderful place to share those. Wilderness School Institute is a non-profit educational organization based in Thorne Bay, Alaska, that is dedicated to offering quality outdoor youth activities, training in wilderness skills, nature studies, and the publishing of fiction and non-fiction--through the imprints Summers Island Press, and Lightsmith Publishers. The publishing division was started by a group of talented authors, illustrators, and editors, to fill a gap in today's marketplace for more encouraging, hope-filled stories on retail bookshelves. So, for all those readers starving for answers, ideas, and heroes that emerge from the fires of ordinary living rather than dark fantasy or the underworld... their books are for you.
Information about our other programs and events can be found, here. Our promise is that each one will have something of value to take home and use in our real lives. Something that will help us understand things better, understand ourselves better, and inspire us to share that understanding in our own diverse worlds. We have a broad spectrum to choose from here at the Wilderness School Institute, so feel free to look around and come back often. CONTACT USGENERAL INQUIRIES
